If you're looking for the best place to buy a diamond in Melbourne, our advice is simple: don't start by looking for the cheapest diamond. Start by looking at who you're buying it from.
Today, it's incredibly easy to search thousands of diamonds online. But a large online inventory doesn't necessarily mean those diamonds are physically available to view, or that experienced diamond and jewellery professionals are there to help you choose between them.
A diamond can look impressive on a certificate and very different in real life.
The best place to buy a diamond is somewhere you can ask questions, compare real diamonds, understand why one diamond costs more than another and make an informed decision without feeling pressured to buy.
Am I buying from a real jeweller or simply an online diamond website?
This is a question we think more people should ask.
Many diamonds today are marketed through large online inventories. You can search by carat, colour, clarity and price and be presented with hundreds — sometimes thousands — of options.
But buying a diamond shouldn't feel like buying a product from an online database.
At KUSH Diamonds, we're a real Melbourne diamond business with real people behind it.
Our private showroom, diamond stock and workshop are based in Melbourne. When you make an appointment, you sit down with experienced jewellery and diamond professionals — not a traditional salesperson working from a script or simply showing you options on a screen.
Our team includes qualified jewellers, gemmologists, diamond graders and valuers, with decades of hands-on experience working with diamonds and fine jewellery.
We can put actual diamonds in front of you.
You can hold them. Compare them. Look at them under different lighting. Ask why one costs more than another. See whether you can actually notice the difference between two colour or clarity grades.
That's very different from choosing a diamond from a photograph and certificate online.
Should I buy a diamond from a jeweller or a diamond wholesaler?
There is an important difference.
A traditional jewellery store will generally sell finished jewellery, while a diamond wholesaler specialises in sourcing and supplying diamonds.
At KUSH Diamonds, we combine both sides of the process.
We are diamond wholesalers and bespoke manufacturing jewellers, which means our clients can select their diamond and have their ring individually designed and made through the same business.
We are not a traditional retail jewellery store.
Our Melbourne showroom is private and operates by appointment, allowing us to spend time understanding what each client actually wants rather than simply selling from a display cabinet.
Should I see a diamond in person before buying it?
Whenever possible, we believe you should.
Online diamond databases can make it appear as though diamonds are easily compared by carat, colour, clarity and price.
In reality, two diamonds with very similar specifications can look quite different.
Their proportions, inclusions, fluorescence, cut and individual characteristics can all affect how they appear.
This is why we encourage clients to sit down and compare diamonds side by side.
You might discover that you can't see the difference between two clarity grades.
You might prefer the appearance or proportions of one diamond over another.
Or you may decide you'd rather put more of your budget towards size instead of paying for a specification you cannot actually see.
There is no substitute for looking at the diamonds yourself.
Isn't the diamond certificate enough?
No.
An independent diamond grading report is extremely important, but a certificate describes a diamond. It doesn't tell you whether you will love it.
For natural diamonds, we commonly work with GIA-certified stones. Lab-grown diamonds may also be independently graded by recognised laboratories such as IGI and GIA.
The certificate gives us important information.
We then assess the actual diamond.
We don't believe somebody should buy a diamond simply because the specifications on the certificate look impressive.
Is the highest colour and clarity always better?
Absolutely not.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions we see when clients begin researching diamonds.
Higher specifications generally cost more. But spending more doesn't necessarily mean you will see a meaningful difference once the diamond is on your hand.
There can be little benefit in paying substantially more for a higher clarity grade if the inclusions in another diamond aren't visible to the naked eye.
Likewise, the highest colour grade isn't automatically necessary for every client.
Our objective is to find the right balance of beauty, size, quality and value for your individual budget.
Sometimes that means recommending that a client doesn't spend more.
Should I choose a natural or lab-grown diamond?
There isn't one correct answer.
Natural and lab-grown diamonds offer very different propositions.
Natural diamonds are formed in the earth and have natural rarity. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments and can allow you to purchase a considerably larger diamond for the same budget.
Their pricing and long-term value characteristics are also very different.
At KUSH Diamonds, we work with both natural and lab-grown diamonds.
Our role isn't to tell every client that one option is better.
It's to explain the differences properly so you can decide which is right for you.
Is buying a diamond online cheaper?
Sometimes a diamond may appear cheaper online, but make sure you're actually comparing the same thing.
A diamond isn't a standardised product where two stones with the same headline specifications are necessarily identical.
If you're comparing diamonds online, look beyond carat, colour and clarity.
Consider the grading laboratory, cut and proportions, fluorescence and the individual characteristics of the stone.
Most importantly, understand why the diamond is priced the way it is.
A cheap diamond isn't necessarily good value if it isn't a beautiful diamond.
What should I ask before buying a diamond?
Ask to see the independent certification.
Ask why that particular diamond is being recommended.
Ask whether you can see and compare other diamonds within your budget.
Ask whether moving up or down in colour, clarity or carat weight will make a difference that you can actually see.
And don't be afraid to ask questions.
A good diamond specialist should be able to explain all of this to you in plain English.
If they can't explain why they're recommending a particular diamond, keep asking questions.
So where is the best place to buy a diamond in Melbourne?
The best place isn't necessarily the website displaying the greatest number of diamonds or the cheapest price beside a certificate.
We believe it's somewhere you can deal with real, experienced diamond and jewellery professionals, see and compare diamonds, receive recognised independent certification, ask questions and understand exactly what you're paying for.
KUSH Diamonds was established in Melbourne in 2011 and is backed by more than 45 years of family experience in the diamond industry and more than 60 years of combined experience.
