Two diamonds of the same carat weight can differ considerably in cut, colour, clarity, proportions and overall appearance.

But even if the diamonds themselves appear similar on paper, the rings they're set into may be very different.

When comparing prices, ask what you're actually getting.

1. Compare the diamond — not just the carat weight

Carat measures weight, not beauty.

Two 2-carat diamonds can look noticeably different depending on their proportions, cut quality and individual characteristics.

A grading report is an important tool, but it doesn't always tell you how beautiful a diamond will look on the hand.

That's why we encourage clients to view and compare diamonds, rather than choosing purely from specifications on a screen.

2. Look at how the ring is made

The setting holding your diamond matters.

Ask whether the ring is individually handmade, locally manufactured or mass-produced. Look at the construction of the band, claws and setting — not simply the size of the centre stone.

3. Compare the precious metal

Two rings described as “18ct gold” aren't necessarily identical in construction.

A very fine or lightweight setting may reduce the initial price, but price shouldn't be considered without understanding how the entire ring has been constructed.

4. Look closely at the setting

Your setting isn't merely there to make the diamond look beautiful — it has to securely hold your stone.

Examine the claws, gallery, band and overall construction.

When comparing rings, ask:

• How is the diamond secured?

• Is the setting appropriate for everyday wear?

• Who made and set the ring?

• Can the ring be resized, serviced and maintained?

• Who will look after the piece in the years ahead?

These questions matter whether you're buying a natural or lab-grown diamond.

5. Consider who is advising you

Buying a diamond can involve far more than choosing a certificate and a carat weight.
