Engagement Ring Settings

A Guide to the ultimate engagement ring

While there is an endless variety of patterns, details and metal choices available, there are four basic types of settings you are likely to encounter when buying an engagement ring:

Solitaire Rings- A single stone. Still the most popular choice in engagement ring at Kush Diamonds and globally! For the most popular round brilliant cut diamond, a four-prong-setting shows more of the diamond, but a six-prong setting is often more secure. The choice of 4 vs 6 claw is up to you, it is all about personal preference. Depending on the shape diamond the number of claws will vary. Solitaire rings are simplistically elegant, suitable for all women.

Side stone Rings- Diamonds or other gemstones, surround the main stone for additional sparkle on the shoulders of the ring. Popular side stone settings include ‘channel’, ‘claw set’ and ‘pavee set’. The difference between these settings is the way they are set in the metal, each giving a different profile and visual appearance to the ring. Choose the setting you prefer based on what visually strikes you. Styles come in and out of fashion but your ring is a long term investment and your sentimental item of love.

Three Stone Rings- One diamond for the past, one for the present, and one for the future. Typically, the centre diamond is larger than the two side stones. We create three stone rings in a variety of shapes, round brilliant being the most popular and traditional shape. Three stones rings can comprise of three diamonds of the same shape or with side stones of different shapes to the centre. Selecting three diamonds which complement and match is a skill of the jeweller. Allow our  jeweller to suggest how to visually create the ring bring out the beauty of all three stones.

Halo – The main stone is surrounded by tiny diamonds to add sparkle and the illusion of greater size. Halo rings can come in a variety of styles depending on the size of the diamonds used  and the shape you wish to create. Most halo rings are created with a single layer of side diamonds surrounding the centre stone. However, for the ladies who are bold and daring preferring to make a statement piece we also create double layered and triple layered halo rings.

As to actual setting design, consider lifestyle and how well a certain setting will fit into it. If she’s more active or outdoorsy, look for lower profile, less ornate, more sturdy choices, which are less likely to get knocked or caught on things. If she’s more of a glamour girl, look for statement settings, with a higher stone profile and more intricate ring detailing or unique motif.

Each of our rings is designed and custom hand-made for your future bride- so do not stress about these finer details! Our jewellers and gemologists will guide you throughout this process, creating a unique ring for you and your partner.
